This one-day training course is for groups of 4 to 12 delegates and is presented at your premises. It covers the basics of effective interpersonal or verbal communication skills.

Effective communication skills are at the heart of business life whether in meetings, one-to-ones, interviews, appraisals, negotiations, presentations - or just in conversation, discussion or debate. Poor interpersonal communication skills can waste a lot of time and money and damage reputations - yours and your organisation's.

This course is for those who wish to improve their verbal communication skills. Delegates will consider specific techniques to improve and then practice using those techniques.

COURSE AIM - Effective Communication Skills

To help delegates to examine and improve their interpersonal communication skills. It covers the skills involved in effective listening, questioning and presenting information to others. It is said that most of us miss about 75% when we are listening. It also considers behaviour styles and how they impact on other people.

  • Effective communication. The characteristics of excellent communicators
  • Developing active listening skills
  • Questioning Skills and the STAR questioning technique
  • Presenting your information clearly so that others can follow your argument
  • Behaviour styles, including assertiveness. Perception, the impact our behaviour has on others
  • Adapting your communication style to suit people and circumstances
  • Discussion or dialogue - the differences

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS - INTRODUCTION

  • Effective verbal communications.
  • Differences between good and poor communicators.
  • Barriers to good verbal communications, things that get in the way.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS - ACTIVE LISTENING

  • What is Active Listening?
  • Verbal and non-verbal encouragers, paraphrasing, reflecting, summarising, etc.
  • Silence as a communication tool.
  • Practice.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS - QUESTIONING

  • Open and closed questions. Probing questions.
  • Avoiding poor questioning techniques.
  • STAR questioning technique.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS - PRESENTING YOUR INFORMATION

  • A logical structure for what you want to say.
  • Using the right language: words and body language.
  • The Four P's approach.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS - BEHAVIOUR TECHNIQUES

  • Four basic behaviour styles.
  • Betaris Box - the impact our behaviour has on others.
  • Assertiveness: an introduction, what it is and how to develop it.
  • Using ego states: an introduction, the Parent, Adult and Child ego states.
